“I dream with a shore, birds at sunset
flying
in pursuit over the water and disappearing
from sight with each folding of their wings.
Just like our loves and prayers”.
Excerpt from Landscape Painted with Tea.
“Man, a mobile entity, is a traveller par
excellence. Subject to the paradox of polarity, he lives,
dreams and exalts in the decision, or the indecision between
this or that road, this route or another. And the means for
the journey are determined by preferences or by chance.
The Art
of Alexis Lago asserts his choice in an archetypal object, a
vessel, symbol of voyages, and traces his way through an
infinite sea. Lago’s preference connotes an inherent
insularity and an aesthetic sense expressed in paintings of
values where contrasts are diluted in an atmosphere of
interior spaces.
His
boats are fragile pretences transporting all sorts of richly
symbolic anthropomorphic beings; human or others that
cherish precious trusts: eggs, fish, birds. But these
“Navigations” are obviously difficult, not free of traps and
falls. This makes necessary the scheme of threads that
sometimes helps to maintain a precarious balance but can
also become nets that impede and mislead the voyager.
The
fruitful junctions of rider-mount, voyager-vessel, and other
associations assume a lewd sense underlining the necessary
symbiosis towards a successful voyage. A painter of
subtleties, of an ontological yearning, Alexis Lago
orchestrates tonalities that range from ferruginous warmth
to the greyish blues of a hopeful dawn. His conceptual
expressions, with symbolic overtones, reveals a thread of
fine perception leading to man’s most deeply rooted journey
and destination: Love”.
